How Does A Chimney Sweep Clean a Chimney?
A chimney sweep can clean the chimney from the top of the chimney or from inside the fireplace. Most chimney sweeps clean the chimney flue from both ends. It is not always important that a chimney sweep go to the roof. If they work from inside the fireplace, or if they work from the top down, both results are effective.
What Does A Chimney Cleaner Do?
The process involves specialized rods and brushes to remove blockages, soot, animal nesting, and buildup from within the fireplace. If you have a chimney liner, the process is the same. Also involved in a typical chimney flue cleaning is removing soot and buildup from the smoke chamber, smoke shelf, damper and firebox.
One thing the chimney sweep will be looking out for is whether creosote is present. If there are signs of creosote, a chemical treatment may be necessary to break down the creosote so that it can be more easily removed.
After the debris is loosened, the next step is to use a vacuum to clean up any soot, nesting materials, creosote or other debris, leaving you with a safer and cleaner fireplace and chimney flue.
